Markets.
Provencal markets are known for their special atmosphere, their excellent products from the region (honey, cheese, soaps, lavender, typical materials etc. ), their fruits, vegetables and flowers but clothes, rings & things etc. as well. Passionates of shopping can live their lives to the full because there is a market nearly every day.
Just a grip of our experiences:
Monday
Forcalquier (Alpes de Hautes Provence), enormous market in a village near the mountains in the Provence, with products from both regions.
Tuesday
Nice market in the lovely village of Cotignac. Cotignac is beautiful village, built against a rock. It is possible to make a walk through the village and to visit houses that are made in the rock. Tuesdays there is a nice large market in Lorgues.
Aix-en-Provence: see Thursday
Wednesday
Aups or Brignoles. The market in Aups on Wednesday is small but very nice market. Visiting the village and strolling through it's streets, window shopping the boutiques. Brignoles has a large market but has not as much the authentic atmosphere of the markets in the Provencal villages.
Thursday
Market days in Greoux les Bains and Les Arcs, both villages are at about 40min. drive.
Aix en Provence (as well on Tuesdays and Saturdays). A large market with an enormous variety of fruits/vegetables, clothes, antiques etc in the streets of the old city from Aix. Just one hour from Fox. It should be a pity not to take the opportunity to visit Aix at the same time.
Friday
Only during the summer months Moustiers has a lovely market on Fridays. Typical Provencal market with local products. Enormous market in Ventimiglia. It takes a while (2 and a half hour ) to get there but it is worth it. You'll have to leave on time to be able to park your car in Ventimiglia.
Saturday
Aups. The market in Aups is larger on Saturdays and especially during the summer season there are a lot of stands with their regional products.Riez has a very nice market on Saturdays too. It is a bit further than Aups, about 30 min drive towards the lavender fields.
Sunday
Salernes. A wonderful large market under beautiful trees that offer a nice refreshment on warm summer days. We think Salernes is one of the most beautiful markets in the Provence. The market in Le Muy is well known in the region and is only 40 minutes away.In Vinon sur Verdon and in Regusse (in summer only) are nice markets too on Sundays.A Sunday going to the sea and a market?? Leave on time and enjoy the beautiful market in La Croix Valmer. At only a few kilometres you'll find the beaches of "Gigaro" and "Débarquement".
